Case study
Bringing proposals and company communication to life

The Neenan Company is a US architecture and construction firm with 60 years of experience designing and building healthcare, education and commercial spaces.
Its integrated design-build approach brings different disciplines together around each project, with communication supporting both competitive project work and a strong internal culture.
The challenge
The company needed to create appealing, distinctive proposals for multiple bidding processes while also keeping employees engaged with training, achievements and company culture.
That meant the design work had to support both winning new business externally and strengthening communication internally.
My role
I worked as the company’s sole Graphic Designer, supporting both business development and internal communication.
My work included:
Creating animations to summarise key proposal content and make presentations more engaging
Designing proposal covers, PowerPoint backgrounds and supporting visual materials for different bids

Producing posters, T-shirts and other materials celebrating company achievements and culture

The company’s visual approach was flexible rather than rigid. Much like its buildings were adapted to each client, proposals and internal communication could take on different visual directions to suit the people and purpose behind them.
What this case shows
Good visual communication does not always mean applying the same look to everything. Sometimes consistency comes from making deliberate choices around the organisation, audience and purpose.
Before deciding how something should look, I consider:
-
Who needs to respond to this?
-
What needs to stand out first?
-
Which format will communicate it best?
-
Would movement add something useful, or is static design enough?
-
How much can the visual direction change while still feeling right for the organisation?
Different communication needs can justify very different visual approaches. The important part is making those differences purposeful rather than arbitrary.
